Kane County's Warehouse Moratorium Is Overdue — Now Make It Permanent
The Kane County Board's 16-8 vote last week to impose a six-month moratorium on new warehouse and distribution center permits was the right call at the right time. What remains to be seen is whether our elected officials will use this breathing room to craft durable zoning protections or simply run out the clock and return to business as usual. We urge the board to treat the moratorium as a beginning, not an endpoint.
The numbers tell the story plainly. Since 2021, more than 4.2 million square feet of logistics space has been approved along the Route 47 corridor between Elburn and Burlington, much of it on formerly productive farmland. Truck traffic on Plank Road has increased 38 percent in four years, according to county highway department data released this spring. Residents of Campton Hills, Lily Lake, and unincorporated Rutland Township have watched property values stagnate while diesel exhaust clouds their morning commutes. The board heard months of testimony from those residents before acting.
