Geneva Approves $14.2M Downtown Streetscape Overhaul Starting This Fall

Maria Castillo, Tribune StaffMay 8, 2026

GENEVA — The Geneva City Council on Monday night approved a $14.2 million streetscape renovation project that will transform a six-block stretch of Third Street with wider sidewalks, new lighting, underground utility upgrades, and dedicated bike lanes. The 8-2 vote came after nearly three hours of public comment from business owners, residents, and downtown property managers.

The project, which city officials say has been in the planning stages since 2023, will be funded through a combination of tax increment financing, a state infrastructure grant of $4.8 million secured last year, and general obligation bonds. Construction is expected to begin in mid-September and continue in phases through the spring of 2028, with crews working block by block to minimize disruption to businesses.
