St. Charles City Council Approves Controversial Downtown Zoning Changes in 4-3 Vote

The St. Charles City Council voted 4-3 Monday night to approve zoning amendments that will allow mixed-use buildings of up to six stories on four parcels along First Street, overriding a planning commission recommendation to cap new construction at four stories.

The vote capped a contentious six-month process that drew more than 200 public comments, with downtown business owners largely supportive and residential neighbors strongly opposed.
