Naperville Township trustees voted 4-1 Tuesday night to commission an independent feasibility study on dissolving the township government entirely, a move that would shift road maintenance, general assistance, and property assessment duties to DuPage County and potentially save taxpayers an estimated $1.8 million annually.
Township Supervisor Greg Callahan, who championed the resolution, said the vote reflected growing frustration among residents who view the 174-year-old governmental layer as redundant. "We're paying for a bureaucracy that duplicates what the county already does," Callahan told roughly 90 residents packed into the township meeting hall on Fort Hill Drive. "The responsible thing is to let the data tell us whether this structure still serves people."
