GENEVA — The Geneva City Council voted 7-3 Monday night to adopt a sweeping ethics ordinance that caps individual campaign contributions to aldermanic candidates at $5,000 per election cycle and bars former city officials from lobbying their ex-colleagues for two years after leaving office.
The measure, which had been debated in committee since February, makes Geneva one of the first Fox Valley municipalities to impose local contribution limits beyond what Illinois state law requires. Proponents said the ordinance would bolster public trust amid rapid development pressure along the Route 38 corridor, while opponents argued it would discourage qualified professionals from seeking office.
