Front-Yard Vegetable Gardens Are Blooming Across Fox Valley Neighborhoods

Tribune LifestyleMay 21, 2026

A growing number of Fox Valley families are ripping out hostas and ornamental grasses to plant tomatoes, peppers, and raised-bed herb gardens in their front yards, a trend local nurseries say has accelerated sharply this spring. Garden centers in Geneva, St. Charles, and Batavia report that sales of front-yard-friendly edible plants are up more than 30 percent over last May, driven by younger homeowners who view food gardening as both a practical household budget strategy and a way to connect with neighbors.

Matt and Sarah Lindgren of North Aurora installed four cedar raised beds along their front walkway in early April and say the response from passersby has been overwhelmingly positive. "We had three neighbors ask us for our lumber supplier within the first week," said Matt Lindgren, 38, a project manager who documented the build on a local Facebook gardening group. "People stop on their evening walks and ask what we're growing. It's become this little community thing we never expected."
