A growing number of Fox Valley homeowners are swapping out tired welcome mats and empty planters for thriving front porch container gardens this summer, turning even the most modest stoops into productive green spaces that yield herbs, cherry tomatoes, and edible flowers from June through October.
The trend, fueled by social media inspiration and a desire to connect with neighbors, has taken particular hold in Geneva, Batavia, and St. Charles subdivisions where compact front porches make traditional raised-bed gardening impractical. Local nurseries report a 30 percent jump in sales of dwarf vegetable varieties and self-watering container systems compared to this time last year, according to staff at Rolling Acres Garden Center on Randall Road.
