Dirt Under Their Nails: Fox Valley Families Turn Patios Into Kitchen Gardens
Raised beds are popping up faster than dandelions across Fox Valley this May, as families from Geneva to North Aurora embrace compact kitchen gardening as both a practical hobby and a way to eat better without spending more. Local nurseries report a sharp uptick in vegetable starts, herb flats, and cedar raised-bed kits, with Wasco Nursery in St. Charles saying sales of edible plants are up nearly 30 percent over this time last year.
The trend tracks with a national shift toward smaller, more intentional food gardens rather than sprawling plots, but in the Fox Valley it has taken on a distinctly community-minded flavor. Neighbors on Batavia's Van Nortwick Avenue organized a seed swap in late April that drew more than 40 households, and similar events have cropped up in Geneva's Mill Creek subdivision and along Randall Road in South Elgin. Participants trade heirloom tomato seeds, pepper starts, and advice on which lettuce varieties handle Kane County's unpredictable late-spring frosts.
