Cold Plunge, Warm Community: Fox Valley Families Embrace Backyard Ice Baths
On any given morning in Geneva's Mill Creek subdivision, at least three neighbors can be found standing in galvanized steel tanks filled with 45-degree water before the sun clears the rooflines. What began as a solo experiment for IT consultant Rob Halverson two winters ago has grown into an informal cold-plunge club that now counts more than a dozen Fox Valley families among its regulars.
The practice of deliberate cold-water immersion has surged in popularity nationally, but in the western suburbs it has taken on a distinctly communal flavor. Halverson, 41, hosts a Saturday morning group session in his backyard where participants rotate through a converted chest freezer he rigged with a water chiller and filtration system. His wife, Kristen, sets out thermoses of black coffee on a folding table nearby. 'People think we're crazy, but after sixty seconds in that water you feel more awake than you have in years,' Halverson said. 'And there's something about doing it together that makes you actually stick with it.'
